Two people arrested in fight involving metal baseball bat at Myrtle Beach Food Lion

Two people were arrested in the parking lot of a Myrtle Beach Food Lion after an altercation Sunday in which one of them beat the other with a metal baseball bat.

Edward Lee McGill, 59, was charged with attempted murder, and Raymond Jett, 60, was charged with third-degree assault and battery and two counts of placing a child at risk.

Myrtle Beach Police officers responded to 1241 38th Avenue North in response to an assault call. According to a police report, two of the victims, Jett and one other unnamed person, followed Jett’s wife and her boyfriend, McGill, from North Carolina to the Food Lion.

While McGill and the woman were inside the store, Jett left a note on the car and waited for them to come out of the Food Lion, according to the report. A witness at the scene told officers that McGill and the woman were loading groceries into their car when Jett walked up and confronted McGill.

Jett “got into a fight stance” before hitting McGill in the head, according to the report. McGill then grabbed a metal baseball bat and began to strike Jett “multiple times in the head, neck and shoulders area.”

McGill continued to strike Jett as he began to retreat backwards, the report said. Another witness attempted to intervene by removing the bat, but McGill and Jett continued to fight with each other on the ground. Officers arrived on the scene shortly after and broke up the fight, the report said.

McGill is being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center with a bond of $300,000.

This is the third incident in the last few months that has happened in a grocery store parking lot in Myrtle Beach.

A North Carolina man was charged with aggravated assault and battery following a shooting on April 3 that happened in the parking lot of a Publix at 7925 North Kings Highway, The Sun News previously reported. Two weeks prior, two customers were held at gunpoint and robbed in the same parking lot.
