It’s showtime! Attendees, bars to be part of Myrtle Beach Bike Rally documentary

It started as a hot dog roast with a few bikers on the sand in 1940 and grew to one of the largest motorcycle gatherings in the country.

But in all those 80 years, the Myrtle Beach Bike Rally has never been officially documented. That will change this year when organizers plan to shoot a professional documentary about the Spring and Fall Rally that is estimated to draw more than 600,000 people between the two events.

The Spring Rally is set to begin Friday and run through May 17. The Fall Rally will be Sept. 25 through Oct. 4.

Lee “Spider“ Webb, chairperson of the Myrtle Beach Bike Rally promotions committee, said visitors will see cameras capturing the event, and interviews will be conducted with bikers and longtime attendees, as well as businesses.

Webb is not sure where the documentary will air, but he has been in talks with a few companies that are interested in acquiring it when finished.

The documentary will focus on how the rally has changed over the years, including how it continued through World War II to the economic impact of the event on the Myrtle Beach area. Webb said it’s interesting how everything has evolved, and how so many businesses, such as Suck Bang Blow and Beaver Bar, have been involved with the rally for years.

“The face of the rally has changed from the rough and tumble image that bikers have had in the past, to riders that want more amenities and nice things and fun things going on,” Webb said. “There are so many things to cover. (There are) parents and grandparents involved with this gathering (since) the 1940s and ‘50s.”
