Fire breaks out on Conway college campus. Students evacuated. What we know

Fire crews are on the scene of an apparent structure fire on the campus of Horry-Georgetown Technical College.

Conway Fire Department reported on social media that crews responded at 1:41 p.m. to the fire at Allied Drive. That address appears to be the Advanced Manufacturing Center Welding Lab.

No injuries are reported, the Facebook post said. However, people are asked to avoid the area.

Horry-Georgetown Technical College responded to a minor fire within the external welding exhaust system on the exterior of the Advanced Manufacturing Center Welding Lab on the Conway campus, according to an emailed statement released Tuesday by Communications Officer Nicole Hyman. A fire suppression system within the exhaust system was automatically activated as designed and contained the incident.

Students were safely evacuated from the building for safety. Horry County Fire Rescue and Conway Fire Department responded to the scene, Hyman said.

Out of an abundance of caution, the area will remain closed while inspections are completed, Hyman said. The college will assess any damage once approval is granted to re-enter the space. The impact to classes cannot be determined at this time and will be evaluated following completion of all required inspections.
