A woman is suing a Murrells Inlet restaurant, claiming that the seafood dish she ordered resulted in a shell becoming lodged in her throat.

Deborah Hauck said she had ordered mussels in white wine tomato cream sauce at Wahoos Fish House, 3993 U.S. 17 Business, on Oct. 11, 2024. But shortly after beginning to eat her meal, she felt a sharp piercing pain in her throat, the suit filed Monday said.

After leaving the restaurant, Hauck immediately went to Conway Medical Center to seek treatment, the suit said. Tests showed that Hauck had a shell “dangerously” lodged in her esophagus, requiring her to undergo surgery to remove it, the suit said.

Hauck claims that the removed shell was present in the sauce she had purchased from Wahoos and unknowingly ingested, the suit said.

A message could not be left for Wahoos Fish House Tuesday morning. A phone number could not be located for Seagrass Operations, which was also named in the suit.

The incident caused “excruciatingly painful injuries” resulting in the restaurant’s negligence in failing to inspect the food before it was served, the suit claims.

Hauck is seeking a jury trial for actual and punitive damages.
