UPDATE: Flights being cancelled at Myrtle Beach airport as SC braces for winter storm
With temperatures forecasted to plunge this weekend, Myrtle Beach International Airport is continuing normal operations, but passengers should be prepared for potential airline delays and cancellations.
“MYR is fully equipped to operate safely during freezing temperatures, with passenger and aircraft safety as its top priority,” said MYR air service and business analyst Lauren Wehrung. “The airport implements comprehensive safety measures to ensure runways and taxiways remain safe for landings and takeoffs.”
As of Saturday evening, at least 18 flights at MYR had been cancelled. Most of those flights were coming from New York, Boston and Dallas-Fort Worth, which has already been hit by the massive ice storm hitting parts of the U.S. Passengers can check their specific arrival or departure flight status online here.
During inclement weather, Wehrung said critical staff remain at the airport 24 hours a day, and airfield conditions are continuously monitored. Runways and taxiways are pre-treated with deicing chemicals and actively deiced when freezing precipitation accumulates. That can slow down departures.
“While MYR remains open, passengers should be aware that airlines may choose to delay or cancel flights due to weather conditions this weekend,” Wehrung said. “In addition, freezing temperatures may require aircraft deicing prior to takeoff, which could result in minor delays.”
The airport is encouraging passengers to check for updates directly from their airlines for the latest flight details.
