Will Myrtle Beach get snow? No, but that’s not what drivers should be worried about

Black ice that formed on bridges and roadways in Horry County in December 2025 caused major accidents. Cold temperatures expected for Sunday, Jan. 18, 2026, into Monday morning could bring more black ice and freezing fog.

It’s not the snow drivers in the Myrtle Beach area should be worried about for Sunday evening, heading into early Monday morning. It’s the black ice.

Hazardous travel conditions because of black ice are expected across the region as temperatures will dip into the mid-20s Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Wind chills may require a cold weather advisory Monday and Tuesday nights, the Weather Service said.

Horry County will stay out of the forecast for snow Sunday night, which will likely be more along the Interstate 95 area, said NWS meteorologist Jordan Baker.

The forecast for Sunday calls for rain all day with highs in the 40s, Baker said.

However, what he is more concerned about is the cold air that will move in Sunday night, creating black ice on bridges and overpasses and slick spots on roadways. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-20s inland and the upper 20s around the coast, Baker said.

“Slick roads are the biggest deal,” Baker said.

There is also a possibility for freezing fog – similar to what occurred in December that caused many accidents in Horry and Georgetown counties, Baker said.

Freezing fog is “pretty rare,” Baker said. The fog that occurred in December was “the first event like that since I’ve been here,” Baker said of working at the NWS.

Baker said residents should “prepare for whatever you do for cold temperatures.”
