Freezing fog causes crashes in Myrtle Beach area. Even colder weather is coming
The Myrtle Beach area saw several crashes early Wednesday morning as temperatures dropped into the low 20s and brought freezing fog.
Crashes were reported along the S.C. 544 bridge crossing the Intracoastal Waterway which closed lanes of traffic and caused delays.
Horry County Fire Rescue responded to several crashes in the Socastee area at about 6:47 a.m., according to the agency’s Facebook post. The crashes were likely caused by ice, the post said. One person was transported to the hospital with injuries.
A message left with Horry County Fire Rescue about how many crashes occurred was not returned by publication.
Colder weather in forecast for Myrtle Beach area
While the Myrtle Beach area is expected to see some warming this week with highs in the upper 50s and possible 60s by Saturday, residents can expect temps to again plummet Sunday night as a dry cold front moves into the area.
However, the roads are not expected to freeze as they did Wednesday morning, which Bob Bright, a meteorologist with National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina, described as “unique” because of the freezing fog.
Bright said the Myrtle Beach area could see some of the “coldest temperatures of the season” beginning Sunday night and into Monday. Lows are expected to be in the 20s and the highs for Monday will be in the 40s.
Although the temps will be below normal, there is no precipitation expected, which means freezing roads or snow, Bright said.
“Chances are small we will see a repeat of that,” Bright said of the freezing bridges.
The average weather for the Grand Strand this time of year is usually in the 50s and 60s.
