Update: DUI arrest made in crash that killed Horry County Schools employee
A woman killed by a car while walking on the sidewalk near Murrells Inlet Tuesday afternoon was an employee with Horry County Schools, the district confirmed Thursday. The driver who hit her has been arrested for driving under the influence.
Elizabeth Coss, 60, died after being struck by a vehicle while walking on the sidewalk, according to an email from Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.
On Tuesday night, the driver of the 2001 Chevrolet van, Camerino Antonio Hernandez, 39, was arrested for felony driving under the influence with death results and driving without a license for the third or subsequent time, the South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed on Thursday afternoon.
Coss was a paraprofessional at St. James High School, located at 10800 SC 707 in Murrells Inlet, according to an email from district spokesperson Lisa Bourcier. Coss was hired by the district in August 2021.
Coss was listed on the high school’s website as a special education aide.
It is believed she may have been walking home from work at the time of the collision.
“It is with extreme sadness to learn of the recent loss of Ms. Elizabeth Coss. This loss is bound to evoke a range of emotions within our entire St. James community, particularly among our students and staff,” Bourcier wrote in a statement. “Our district has a team of counselors who are professionals equipped to support the needs of students, parents, and school personnel during challenging times like these. Our counselors will be accessible to any student or employee who may require or desire assistance. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and students who are most impacted by this loss.”
The collision occurred at 4:25 p.m. on SC 707 near the intersection of Starbuck Lake Road in Murrells Inlet, when a car traveling south ran off the right side of the road and struck Coss, The Sun News previously reported. Coss died from her injuries, and Hernandez, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transported to Waccamaw Hospital for undisclosed injuries. He was later booked into J Reuben Long Detention Center, where he remains without bail.
