What’s happening to The Pelican Motel in North Myrtle Beach? What we know
A former oceanfront motel in North Myrtle Beach was purchased by the city and is undergoing demolition.
The Pelican Motel, at the corner of Sea Mountain Highway and Ocean Boulevard in the Cherry Grove section of North Myrtle Beach, was in operation for almost 60 years until it was sold to the City of North Myrtle Beach in 2023.
Land records show the city purchased the property for $5.4 million.
In an email to The Sun News, North Myrtle Beach spokesperson Lauren Jessie wrote that the city originally purchased the motel to expand public beach access.
Currently, the city is working on clearing the site of the former motel, according to Jessie.
“Once cleared, the Public Works Department will convert it into a coquina public parking lot,” she wrote. “We anticipate this public parking lot to be completed and open to the public in January of 2026, weather permitting.”
The motel was previously family-owned, according to previous Sun News reporting.
