Update: 2 F-16 military planes make emergency landing at Myrtle Beach airport
Military aircrafts landed at Myrtle Beach International Airport earlier Monday morning after reporting possible engine issues, spokesperson Ryan Betcher wrote via email.
In an email to The Sun News on Wednesday morning, Chief of Public Affairs Captain James Stewart wrote that the aircrafts were two F-16s and that there was one aircrew per aircraft at the time of the landing. No injuries were reported, Stewart wrote.
The F-16s are assigned to the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw Air Force Base and were conducting a training mission and returned to the base on Tuesday afternoon, Stewart confirmed.
“Both F-16s experienced mechanical issues requiring landing at Myrtle Beach International Airport,” his email read. “Maintenance teams assessed the aircraft and made required repairs.”
At approximately 9:15 a.m. Monday morning, Betcher said the military aircraft requested to land at the Myrtle Beach airport, and was able to do so without incident. After landing, the aircraft “made its way to the general aviation ramp under its own power,” he wrote.
According to Betcher, the airport followed standard procedures after the landing and completed a runway and taxiway inspection. Arrivals and departures on commercial flights were not impacted by the landing, flight data showed.
Betcher said he was not sure what branch of the military the aircraft was part of or where the aircraft was coming from.
