A toddler’s death is being investigated after he drowned in his family’s Surfside Beach swimming pool.

Bennett Thompson, 2, was pulled from the pool and taken to the hospital on Monday, July 21. He died at the hospital from asphyxiation due to drowning, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.

The Horry County Police Department and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating the incident.

No further information has been released.

This is at least the third drowning death in the Myrtle Beach area this summer, and the second in Surfside Beach after a child was pulled from a retention pond last month.

A 21-year old swimmer who went missing in the ocean in North Myrtle Beach at the beginning of July has not been found.
