A locally-owned Cuban restaurant in North Myrtle Beach is opening a new bakery this weekend, and the public can come enjoy free samples of their freshly-baked selections.

Cuba Bar and Restaurante is hosting a grand opening event for the new bakery on Saturday, starting at 2 pm. The event will feature samples of the bakery’s new pastries and treats, which include guava and cream cheese pastelitos, bread pudding, flan, empanadas, rice pudding and more.

The restaurant opened in 2023, bringing authentic Cuban food like plantains and fresh Cuban sandwiches to the North Myrtle Beach area. They have typically welcomed diners in the evenings only, but with the introduction of hot bakery items, they will begin opening for a breakfast and lunch period from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily before opening again for their typical 4 to 11 p.m. dinner time.

Dariela Velasquez, the manager of Cuba Bar and Restaurante who co-owns the new bakery alongside her husband, said that she looks forward to bringing authentic Cuban desserts and baked items to the community. Even their already popular Cuban sandwiches will be upgraded, using bread baked fresh in-house, she said.

“People will get to have fresh bread that just came out of the oven,” Velasquez said. “That’s not very common in the area.”

While the restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch, diners also can get authentic Cuban toast, bread stuffed with ham and cheese, empanadas, Cuban pizzas and other new bakery items with a cup of Cuban coffee or juice. Or, if customers don’t have time for a sit-down meal, they can stop by any time the restaurant is open to pick up fresh bread.

After dinner, diners can also round out their meal with a freshly-made sweet treat, such as flan or a piece of tres leches cake.

“We get the opportunity to offer our customers authentic Cuban desserts,” Velasquez said with excitement.

Velasquez said that she and her colleagues are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to let people try their authentic Cuban food offerings, which can be hard to find in the area.

“It’s something new for us,” she said. “We want to bring a real taste of our heritage to the community.”

Cuba Bar and Restaurante is located at 70 Highway 17 South in North Myrtle Beach.
