When will temperatures around Myrtle Beach, SC warm to 60 degrees? What the latest forecasts say
After northeast South Carolina was hit by a rare snowstorm this week, Horry County was blanketed in as much as 6 inches of snow. Beyond the initial snowfall Tuesday night, unusually cold temperatures persist in the area.
“It’s just been a very resilient arctic air mass,” said Steven Pfaff, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Wilmington. “It’s just these multi-day Arctic events, especially this far south, create a whole bunch of problems.”
But Pfaff expects that the Grand Strand will “finally” see a “much-anticipated warm up” early next week and, by Wednesday, temperatures could even reach 60 degrees.
On Thursday morning, Pfaff predicted that Sunday could bring highs in the upper 40s to around 50 degrees, with the possibility of one last round of freezing temperatures Sunday night.
Temperatures are expected to continue to rise, with high temperatures around Horry County in the low 50s on Monday and high 50s on Tuesday. While current NWS forecasts for Horry County call for highs in the high 50s on Wednesday, Pfaff said temperatures could reach 60 degrees.
In the meantime, freezing temperatures pose major risks to people, pets and infrastructure.
“We’re obviously concerned, because it’s not going to really warm up all that much today and what does melt will refreeze again,” Pfaff said Thursday.
While the frigid weather persists, it’s best to take precautions like avoiding unnecessary exposure to the cold, staying off roads when possible and using extreme caution when driving.
Roads concealed by trees that don’t get much direct sunlight and bridges and overpasses that ice over easily can all be especially dangerous in freezing temperatures after precipitation.
“While there’ll be widespread travel issues likely tonight and into tomorrow morning, I think the impact will be less and less over the subsequent days, and especially by this weekend, in particular,” Pfaff said.
