Winter storm cancels over 50% of flights out of the Myrtle Beach International Airport
Over half of the flights taking off Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning from the Myrtle Beach International Airport have been canceled.
Out of the currently 12 flights scheduled to leave MYR between 5 p.m. on Jan. 21 and around 11:10 a.m. on Jan. 22, seven have been canceled, according to the airport website. These decisions are being made by the airlines and not the airport, said Myrtle Beach International Airport Spokesman Ryan Betcher.
“Mostly what we’re seeing is airlines canceling preemptively,” Betcher said.
Myrtle Beach is expecting snowfall Tuesday night between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m., with almost 3 inches of snow possible, The Sun News reported. Along with the snow, below-freezing temperatures hit the Grand Strand this week.
The canceled flights were supposed to bring passengers to Charlotte, Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Nashville. Charlotte and the D.C. area are facing a chance of flurries tonight while all three areas are dealing with cold temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.
Many MYR arrivals have also been canceled as seven out of 13 flights were canceled. These flights also come from Charlotte, Baltimore, and Washington D.C.
To prevent more flight cancellations, airport staff will work through the night to keep the runway safe, Betcher said. They’ll continuously de-ice to avoid ice and snow from sticking to the ground.
Betcher recommends those who plan to travel through the Myrtle Beach International Airport Tuesday night and Wednesday morning to monitor their flight status. He also said passengers should reach out to airlines directly regarding cancellations.
“The airlines are the ones dictating cancellations,” Betcher said.
