19 lose home after fire tore through Myrtle Beach motel Christmas Day. Owner is devastated
Nineteen people who lost their home Christmas Day when a fire tore through a Myrtle Beach motel are being helped by the American Red Cross of South Carolina.
The Red Cross said that it has opened 11 cases for those who lived at the Atlantic Sands motel, 308 2nd Ave. North. The agency is providing financial assistance for food, clothing, shelter and medical items lost in the fire, a press release said.
The owner of the apartments, who asked not to be named, said that there were 13 rooms and a manager’s apartment in the building. She said that there may have been a few rooms open, but all of them were full.
The owner lives in Virginia and she has a man who manages the apartments, she said. He was out of town spending Christmas with his parents when the fire occurred.
“He lost all of his stuff,” she said. Thankfully, she said no one was hurt.
The owner said Myrtle Beach Fire Department was set to be at the building Thursday morning to try to figure out what caused the fire.
In the meantime, she is trying to figure out what to do about her business.
Capt. Jon Evans said Thursday morning that it is still undetermined what caused the fire.
The fire appeared to have started about 3 p.m. Myrtle Beach Fire crews responded to the fire, which sent large plumes of smoke into the area that could be seen across the city.
