A swimmer has died after being rescued from the ocean in Pawleys Island.

Pawleys Island Police posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that rescue crews responded at 4:15 p.m. Thursday to a swimmer in distress in the area of the 34d Street beach access.

Two members of the police department entered the water to perform a rescue and were joined by a member of the Midway Fire Rescue, the post said.

Resuscitation efforts were initiated on scene and the victim was transported to the hospital, the post said.

The swimmer later died, the post said.

The name of the swimmer has not been released, but Georgetown County Coroner Chase Ridgeway confirmed that an 87-year-old man drowned, according to GAB News.

This is the second drowning in Pawleys Island this month. A 22-year-old Virginia woman drowned on Oct. 17 after going missing in the ocean. A male swimmer was rescued.
