SC man found unresponsive in jail after shooting 2 people, barricading self in home
A Surfside Beach man in jail after an officer-involved shooting during an hours-long standoff was found unresponsive in his cell on Oct. 5, according to spokesperson Brennan Cavanagh.
Neil Wade Brown was found by an officer unresponsive in his cell at 10:15 a.m. at J. Reuben Long Detention Center, Cavanagh said. Brown had a self-inflicted injury and the officer immediately alerted medical staff.
Brown was transported to Grand Strand Medical Center. It is unclear what Brown’s condition is.
South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is conducting an inquiry into the incident, Cavanagh said.
Brown was arrested after he allegedly chased two people through a neighborhood while firing shots at them before later shooting at Horry County Police officers. Two people were shot in the incident.
Brown, 60, was arrested on Sept. 13 for two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, breach of peace, four counts of pointing and presenting firearms at a person, two counts of discharging firearms into a dwelling, four counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, first-degree burglary and domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, The Sun News reported.
Brown is accused of unlawfully entering the home along South Reindeer Road after getting in a fight with someone on the phone and then chasing two people who fled from the home to another home next door. Brown followed the pair while shooting at them, a SLED report said.
Brown then barricaded himself inside the home for about two hours before surrendering to police.
