SC man chased two people while shooting, barricaded himself in neighbor’s home, SLED said
South Carolina Law Enforcement Division released details Monday of an officer-involved shooting during an hours-long standoff with a barricaded man near Surfside Beach.
A Surfside Beach man was arrested after he allegedly chased two people through a neighborhood while firing rounds at them before later shooting at Horry County police officers.
Neil Wade Brown, 60, was arrested on Sept. 13 for two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, breach of peace, four counts of pointing and presenting firearms at a person, two counts of discharging firearms into a dwelling, four counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, first-degree burglary and domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, The Sun News reported.
Brown is accused of unlawfully entering a home about 9 p.m. Thursday along South Reindeer Road with two firearms in his possession after getting in a fight with someone on the phone, according to an affidavit from SLED.
Once inside the home, the argument continued , escalating until two people fled from the house and ran to another home next door.
Brown followed the pair while shooting at them, with multiple bullets landing in one home. He also shot four times at the front door, the SLED report said.
The two people he chased were shot and needed “extensive emergency medical treatment,” the affidavit said.
Brown then returned to the first home and barricaded himself inside before shooting multiple times, including at a bedroom with multiple people inside. The gunshots damaged the home, the report said.
Around this time, Horry County Police evacuated the surrounding homes.
Horry County police officers confronted Brown around 9:41 p.m. in the backyard where Brown was holding his firearms. He shot at police officers who shot back, however no one was hurt. At 11:08 p.m., Brown surrendered to officers.
The relationship between Brown and the victims was not stated in the affidavit. Brown is currently being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bail.
Surfside Beach Mayor Robert Krouse wrote in his weekly newsletter Friday that Surfside Beach Police officers were able to assist in the evacuation of neighboring houses and getting shooting victims to an ambulance.
HCPD Special Operations teams, including SWAT, negotiations and drone team members, worked for about two hours to safely resolve the incident.
The incident in Horry County was the 32nd officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2024, according to a Friday SLED press release. This is the first officer involved shooting for the Horry County Police Department this year.
