Opening delayed of Cherry Grove Pier in North Myrtle Beach. Here’s what’s next
Visitors can expect the Cherry Grove Pier to reopen sometime this spring.
Earlier this year, pier manager Edgar Stephens told The Sun News he hoped the pier would open in September. However, due to additional damage that was found, construction is taking longer than originally expected, Stephens said Wednesday. He would not elaborate on the what damage was found.
Currently, crews are building and replacing deck boards, pilings and braces. The pilings are braces give the pier a solid foundation. They will continue this work for the next several months
The pier was split in half during Hurricane Ian in 2022, which brought powerful storm surges, winds and rain to Horry County. The storm damaged several other piers, including the Pawleys Island Pier, the Myrtle Beach State Park Pier, the 2nd Avenue Pier, the Apache Pier, and the Sea Cabin Pier.
This is not the first time Cherry Grove Pier has been rebuilt. Since opening in the 1950s, it has survived several hurricanes and, as a result, has had several repair projects.
