Large scale animal neglect case in Horry county temporally forces shelter’s closure

More than 30 dogs are receiving emergency medical care Friday at the Horry County Animal Care Center, requiring the center be temporarily closed to the public.

Police are working with the center’s staff to investigate an animal neglect case, and the closure will last until at least Saturday, Horry County Police announced in a news release.

The center in Conway will not be able to conduct adoptions or accept owner surrenders or strays during the closure, the release states.

Rescues will continue on a case-by-case basis, and concerned citizens are encouraged to call the county’s non-emergency dispatch line at 843-248-1520 for animal-related public safety concerns.

HCPD spokeswoman Mikayla Moskov was unable to answer questions regarding the location of the investigation or if any arrests have been made, but did confirm that all the animals seized were dogs.
