Shelter overflowing sparks need for adoption events. Goal to place 50 dogs this weekend.

The Grand Strand Humane Society is hosting a free adoption event this weekend in Myrtle Beach.

Executive director of humane society, Jess Wnuk, said events like these are crucial as there is a overflow of animals in open admission shelters, not just here in Myrtle Beach but across the country.

Wnuk said it is very difficult to find adoptive families around the summer time due to people vacationing, at work, or just not thinking about adding the responsibility of a pet. She said especially here, where there is a lot of tourists, the shelter gets many animals that have been left in hotels or locked in hot cars while their families are at the beach.

Those wishing to adopt will fill out an application when they get there and have a conversation with staff members to find the best match possible. The application includes questions like where the dog will be sleeping, if the adopter has ever been arrested for animal cruelty or if they have ever abandoned a pet. These questions help to ensure the dog will be going to a safe, loving home.

GSHS said their goal is to find homes for 50 dogs. They also welcome any volunteers or people that want to foster to come as well.

The event is located on the corner of Mr. Joe White Avenue and North Avenue at the Bill M. Wingard Puppy Playground this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Each adopted dog will be sent home with a harness, leash, dog bed, and other supplies. All dogs will be microchipped and vaccinated before they are sent to their new homes.
