An 11-year-old died in a Myrtle Beach resort pool. His family says management is to blame.

An 11-year-old drowned in a Myrtle Beach resort pool last year, and his family now says the hotel’s management created unsafe conditions.

Trenton Piper, of Cincinnati, drowned at the Beach Colony Resort, 5308 N. Ocean Blvd., in June 2019. His family filed a lawsuit this week against Beach Colony Resort and others over his death.

The family said they were guests of the resort when Piper drowned, according to the filing. The child was pulled from the pool and given CPR but died.

Piper’s family says the resort failed to supervise the indoor pool area or have a lifeguard on duty.

The management also created a pool area that was “unsafe, dangerous or (in) defective condition,” the filing states.

There was not enough staff to make sure the guests on the property were safe, according to the family. Management also failed to properly hire, train and supervise the employees.

Management’s decisions led to Piper’s death, his family claims. The lawsuit asks for an unspecified amount of money.

Officials from the Beach Colony Resort could not be reached in time for this report.
