Horry, Georgetown police chiefs release statement with more protests on the horizon

Police chiefs from Horry and Georgetown counties gathered together for a video statement to “condemn any actions by law enforcement that are not to the highest standard.”

The statement comes as a weekend of protests, demonstrations and gatherings are planned for the Myrtle Beach area.

The chiefs released the statement on Friday, which included them reciting an oath from when they take office.

“On my honor, I will never betray my badge, my integrity, my character, or the public trust. I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. I will always uphold the constitution, my community, and the agency I serve.”

The law enforcement leaders also called what has taken place across the country “disturbing.”

“We condemn any actions by law enforcement that are not to the highest standard. We will not stand for those who endanger our communities or tarnish the reputation of this noble profession,” the officials said.

The chiefs vowed to act with honor and to hold each other to a higher standard.

Several demonstrations are planned in the Myrtle Beach area this weekend, including a gathering in The Market Common’s Grand Park on Sunday afternoon.

There were three separate protests in downtown Myrtle Beach last Sunday. One included a large group gathering in front of the Myrtle Beach Police Department. That protest was broken up by the police as it extended past a city-wide curfew.

Police charged more than 20 people in connection to that protest and violating the curfew.
