Roads, boat landings flooded: A look at rising waters in the Conway area

Roads and boat landings are flooded around the Conway area Friday as the Waccamaw River is forecast to crest Saturday evening.

The Conway Marina boat landing and a dozen Horry County landings remain closed until water recedes. The National Weather Service in Wilmington predicts the Waccamaw River at Conway will crest Saturday night at moderate flood level. As of Friday, the river had risen 13.7 feet and is forecast to crest at 13.9, said NWS meteorologist Ian Boatman.

“Looks like we are staying in moderate flood level for the foreseeable future,” Boatman said, noting moderate flood levels are above 12 feet.

Drivers should be cautious of water in roads at riverfront south, Lee’s Landing, Savannah Bluff, Pitch Landing, Jackson Bluff and the Bucksville area, Boatman said.

Water had nearly covered the Conway Marina parking lot as of Friday morning and floodwater has surrounded the Riverwalk, though it is still walkable in most areas. At Lee’s Landing, the roadway is blocked off less than a mile from the landing and rushing water has covered most of the intersection at the boat landing Friday.

Rain and thunderstorms are possible Saturday and Sunday in the Conway area, but rainfall is not expected to impact river flooding, the NWS in Wilmington reports.
