Here’s what you need to know about Myrtle Beach’s annual Smoke on the Beach competition

If you think you’re a master at barbecuing, then it’s time to put your money where your mouth is.

The Myrtle Beach Shrine Club along with the Omar Shriners will host the Smoke on the Beach Barbecue competition on March 20 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and March 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The family-friendly event, which is held at Burroughs & Chapin Pavilion Place on Ocean Boulevard between 8th and 9th Avenues North, will feature food, vendors, drinks and live music.

Proceeds from the event will go towards the Shriners philanthropy.

To participate, entries will be limited to the first 50 teams and carry a $200 entry fee per team plus a $25 clean-up fee. It’ll be an additional $50 per team to enter the rib competition, with each team responsible for providing their own ribs for the competition. All other meats will be furnished by Myrtle Beach Shrine Club.

Teams participating in the “anything butt” competition must also supply their own plates, napkins and utensils to serve food to the public.

Each team can consist of a pit master, alternative pit master and as many assistants as the pit master deems necessary, according to the events rules and guidelines. Each team will provide a grill or cooker to be used exclusively by that team within the confines of the teams’ assigned cooking space, with all cooking and seasoning done within that space.

Contestants must adhere to S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control safety, sanitary, temperature and food service guidelines. Teams must also follow local, county, state and federal fire and health codes. An event authorization form will be submitted to DHEC with contestants’ information, according to the events guidelines.

The first night of the event will feature the wing competition with samples available to the public for a minimal price and the “anything butt” competition. Barbecue judging will begin at 10 a.m. on March 21 with all cooked meat also for sale to the public during and after judging.
