Conway child killed in Georgetown-area crash, mother charged

A 9-year-old died after a Sunday crash in Georgetown, and her mother faces up to 25 years in prison in connection to the fatal crash.

Camari Chestnut, of Conway, died in the single-vehicle crash on Old Pee Dee Road near Hill Drive around 1:30 p.m., the Georgetown County Coroner’s Office announced Monday. She was a student at Conway Elementary School.

Her cause of death was multiple trauma, according to the coroner’s office.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol charged her mother, Catilia Chestnut, 31, with DUI resulting in death, Georgetown and Horry Solicitor Jimmy Richardson said. She is being held in the Georgetown County Detention Center without bond.

The crash is under investigation by S.C. Highway Patrol.

Highway Patrol Cpl. Sonny Collins did not know Chestnut’s blood alcohol content.

Catilia Chestnut drove a van on Old Pee Dee Road when it went off the roadway and killed the 9-year-old, who was not wearing a seat belt, according to highway patrol troopers.
