Coronavirus live updates June 27: Myrtle Beach area sees more than 200 new COVID-19 cases

Coronavirus cases continued to skyrocket in the Myrtle Beach area Saturday, according to the latest figures from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Horry County had 221 new cases as of Saturday, bringing the county’s total to 2,801 since mid-March. Horry County had two new deaths and the total rose to 44.

In Georgetown County, there have been 426 confirmed cases and three deaths, according to DHEC.

Here are live updates on the coronavirus in the Myrtle Beach area today.

So far this week, 872 have been announced in Horry County, records show. Last week, the county saw about 800 new cases. Horry County government has 29 employee who have tested positive for the virus and 50 tests that are pending.

Horry County saw two new deaths, according to DHEC’s website, though a news release lists just one — and elderly person.

The jump in cases in the Myrtle Beach and Horry County areas comes as we approach one of the biggest tourism weekends of the year. Fourth of July celebrations are set for a week from today.

Cases across South Carolina rose by 1,587 on Saturday, bringing totals to 31,850 with 707 COVID-19 deaths. The state first eclipsed 30,000 cases Friday.
