Coronavirus updates May 24: Another Myrtle Beach shooting derails calm holiday beginning

The first two days of the Memorial Day weekend were relatively calm compared to other years — until early Sunday morning.

Shots rang out on Ocean Boulevard for the second weekend in a row, leaving several people injured from an incident that took place around 12:30 a.m. near 12th Avenue North and Ocean Boulevard, according to Myrtle Beach police. When officers arrived, they found several people injured, the department stated. There is no word on the extent of their injuries. At least three people were shot, according to police radio traffic.

All of a sudden, concerns of social distancing and who is and isn’t wearing masks became secondary concerns. It was the second weekend in a row that a shooting left several injured along the most populated part of Ocean Boulevard.

“I’m worried about that,” said Amordelisa Arbis, who works near the site of the shootings. “It’s crazy.”

Some people were detained in the immediate aftermath, though it’s unclear if they remained detained as of Sunday afternoon.

Follow along here today as we bring you the latest updates on the coronavirus in the Myrtle Beach area.

Wash your hands & weekend forecast

Here is your daily reminder to wash your hands often and practice social distancing. Washing your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water can help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, health officials say. It’s also important to practice social distancing as those guidelines are still in place.
