Construction on Myrtle Beach’s new Publix in The Market Common neighborhood is making slow but steady progress.

It’s been nearly a year since the new grocery store was first announced, but it appears the store still has quite a ways to go before it can open.

But!

Two weeks ago, it had just one wall. Now it has three!

Before construction began, much of that area had to be cleared of trees and brush. Now, crews are working on the building’s outside structure, based on a recent drive by the construction site. It is located on the southeast corner of U.S. Highway 17 Bypass and Coventry Boulevard, down the street from the South Strand Medical Center.

The location gives much of The Market Common neighborhood direct access to the store without having to go on any highways. Coventry Boulevard runs through much of the neighborhood.

A sign near the construction site states that the Publix will anchor a shopping center called “Coventry Marketplace” with a rendering of the area showing several spots for retail and restaurants.

Last February, Publix said the 45,000-square-foot store was scheduled to open in late 2022. The company was not able to share a more definitive opening date when contacted this week.

“We are always looking to grow across the Pee Dee. We’ve received numerous requests for us join this area of the strand and we’re happy to meet that need,” Publix spokesman Jared Glover said in an email.

This Publix will be the sixth in the Grand Strand. The company already has locations in Carolina Forest, Murrells Inlet, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island.
