Chipotle Mexican Grill is opening a Myrtle Beach area location in the South Strand Commons, according to permits filed with Horry County.
The Mexican fast food restaurant already has two locations along the Grand Strand, one near Coastal Grand mall in Myrtle Beach and a second on U.S. 17 Business near the Publix store in North Myrtle Beach. Another Chipotle is also set to open this summer at the Village Shops at Grande Dunes along with a Publix and Starbucks.
A flurry of new restaurants have recently announced expansions and new locations across the Myrtle Beach area —including the area’s first Wahlburger’s, the burger joint that inspired a reality TV show. Popeye’s and Panera also are planning to open their first locations along the Grand Strand.
A Chipotle spokesman could not be reached for details, including when the new location will open.
The restaurant prides itself on serving natural ingredients and food produced from environmentally sound farming and ranching practices.
But the Denver-based business is still reeling from an outbreak of E. coli contamination that began in November, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say sickened 55 people in 11 states, none of which were in South Carolina.
Numerous food preparations practices have since been changed, including the off-site preparation of some vegetables, and restaurant workers no longer directly handle raw meat.
