Dagwood’s in Surfside Beach planning its return following fire. When will it be back?
After a fire early January, Dagwood’s Deli & Sports Bar in Surfside Beach has been trying to figure out how to return.
Dagwood’s general manager Maribeth Lamuraglia said she hopes to reopen in the spring. Currently, Dagwood’s is working with insurance to figure out repairs.
Most of the rebuilding happens in the kitchen, with the ceiling, HVAC and rafters being damaged in the fire, Lamuraglia said. There’s also water damage from the fire being put out. Because of the mangled rafters, the building has structural problems that need to be addressed.
It’s unknown what caused the fire the night of Jan. 2. Lamuraglia said the fire wasn’t electrical, and there are only theories about where it started.
For the time being, most of the employees are collecting unemployment while waiting for Dagwood’s to reopen.
“I can bring a couple people to other locations, but with hospitality industry in January, other locations are not busy,” Lamuraglia.
To help out employees, Dagwood’s is hosting a fundraiser on Jan. 24 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Surfside Beach location, 600 U.S. 17 Business. There will be hot dogs, barbecue, T-shirts and calendars for sale and all proceeds will go to employees.
“The outpouring of love from our guests is overwhelming,” Lamurgalia said. “We’re hoping to do the best we can as soon as we can.”
Dagwood’s Deli first opened in downtown Myrtle Beach in 1988 serving deli sandwiches and subs. It expanded in 2006 to Surfside Beach and to North Myrtle Beach in 2022, according to its website.
