Is the Sandcastle Oceanfront Resort in Myrtle Beach closed forever? Here’s what we know
One of the biggest oceanfront hotel properties in Myrtle Beach says they’re “permanently closed” on Google when you try to look them up.
A screenshot of the lack of hours was posted in a local Facebook group over the weekend, causing Myrtle Beach residents and visitors to wonder what was happening with the Sandcastle Oceanfront Resort at the Pavilion.
According to a sign on the door, the hotel is currently undergoing renovations.
The $34 million renovation was scheduled to start this fall, with plans to reopen in the first months of 2025 before the height of summer tourism in Myrtle Beach, previous reporting said.
The resort had previously been acquired by a California-based private equity firm, Hybridge Capital Management.
One of the firm’s managing partners told The Sun News over the summer that the renovations would include floors, windows, HVAC and a club concept for the resort’s amenities across the street.
“Myrtle Beach, in general, just has so much potential. I believe, from a macroeconomic perspective, the next 10 years, it’s poised to do very well,” Max Mellman told The Sun News in July when the renovations were first announced. “The cost of living, the cost to travel, everything’s just gotten a lot more expensive, and people are getting pushed out of places like New York and Miami, looking for, you know, beach town to travel to that’s affordable.”
Once completed, the resort will be re-branded as a voco Hotel, which is owned by IHG Hotels & Resorts. That group also owns the Holiday Inn brand.
voco currently operates 12 hotels in the United States, according to their website. The Myrtle Beach location is not yet listed as one of them.
In addition to owning and now renovating the Sandcastle Resort in Myrtle Beach, Hybridge Capital Management has a portfolio that includes real estate in South Lake Tahoe, CA; Denver; Los Angeles; Oakland, CA; Kamuela, HI and Coachella Valley, CA, according to their website.
Hybridge Capital also previously acquired The Yachtsman in Myrtle Beach, their portfolio said.
