Looking for another Pittsburgh sports bar? Biltzburgh has opened in Murrells Inlet
Mark Gorshin moved from Pittsburgh to Myrtle Beach in February to join his parents and interview for a sales job with Comcast.
Once he arrived, however, he thought better of it and instead pitched an idea for a sports bar to his father, Frank.
They are now partners in Blitzburgh Sports Bar & Grill, which opened a few weeks ago off U.S. 17 Business in Murrells Inlet.
“I was coming down here to take a sales job and my dad and I got together and opened a bar,” Gorshin said.
The bar was previously called HighTides Bar & Grill. Gorshin renovated the space before opening, incorporating the familiar black and gold colors of the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL, Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL and Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball.
He chose the name Blitzburgh as a nod to the nickname of Steelers defenses under former defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau.
After Gorshin graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in hospitality management, he managed hotels and restaurants. He then spent 15 years in sales, and after his parents moved to Myrtle Beach he visited for a week “and kind of liked it,” so he lined up the interview with Comcast.
An ode to Pittsburgh
There already are several Pittsburgh-themed sports bars on the Grand Strand, including Spencer’z Sports Bar in Surfside Beach, King Street Grille in Market Common, Murphy’s Law locations in Surfside Beach and Carolina Forest, Oscar’s Food & Spirits in North Myrtle Beach, and Pittsburgh Pizza Pub in North Myrtle Beach.
“I knew there were a few out there but it didn’t deter me because I had an idea and I just went with it. Sometimes you just have to go for it,” Gorshin said. “I’ve been in the business, so I kind of know the ins and outs. It has been doing good. We’re getting all the locals together.
“... I like the location. There are a lot of Pittsburgh people in the area. Sunday it was wall to wall here.”
Blitzburgh’s odes to the city of Pittsburgh include selling Iron City and IC Light beers, the decor and naming drinks and food items after Pittsburgh. Gorshin said popular food items include Pittsburgh potato and cheese pierogies and the Pitt cheese steak.
Walls are adorned with a giant Terrible Towel, signed jerseys by current and former Steelers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Alan Faneca, canvases of Steelers, Penguins and Pirates players, photos, and some Coastal Carolina merchandise.
The menu features about a dozen appetizers, including fried pickles, grilled buffalo shrimp and wings, salads with steak or chicken, and a handful of burgers and sandwiches with fresh cut french fries.
Daily food and drink specials will be posted on Blitzburgh’s Facebook page.
Blitzburgh has 10 TVs measuring either 75 or 85 inches; all NFL, NHL and NBA games are available daily.
Happy hour is from 4-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday and features appetizer specials, $3.50 well drinks and discounted beer and wine.
