Longtime local sub restaurant closes after over 45 years in downtown Myrtle Beach
For decades, the bright yellow roof and marquee letters of longtime local restaurant Mr. Sub caught the attention of anyone driving down North Kings Highway. Now, after more than 45 years serving lunch to locals and tourists alike, the sub shop has permanently closed.
Mr. Sub, which was located at the intersection of Broadway Street and Mr. Joe White Avenue, first opened in downtown Myrtle Beach in 1979. Brothers and Mr. Sub co-owners Ken and Tom Conley moved from Pennsylvania to the Grand Strand in the late 1970s after frequently vacationing in Myrtle Beach during their childhood.
Once they moved to Myrtle Beach, it did not take long for the Conleys to decide to open the sub restaurant. The brothers owned and operated Mr. Sub for 43 years, making the restaurant a local favorite for their oven-baked, grilled and cold subs.
After more than four decades of serving Myrtle Beach diners, the Conley brothers made the decision to retire from sub-making in early 2022. When they stepped down from Mr. Sub, the two expressed a desire for someone to buy the restaurant and continue serving its classic subs, but the business sat dormant for more than a year.
New owner takes over Mr. Sub
Mr. Sub was given new life when local hospitality professional Bashir Turjuman bought and reopened Mr. Sub in 2023, just over a year after the restaurant’s initial closure.
With much of the iconic appearance and menu staying the same, Turjuman made a few food additions. He expanded Mr. Sub’s offering of gyros, and also introduced burgers and seafood options.
Just over three years since Turjuman took over, however, Mr. Sub has closed again, with no sign of reopening, at least not in the iconic building on Broadway Street.
Caribbean Flavaz takes over
Customers flooded the restaurant in its final days in 2022 after Mr. Sub announced it was closing. But this time, Mr. Sub has gone quickly and quietly.
A new restaurant, Caribbean Flavaz, has already taken over the former Mr. Sub building. The family owned restaurant serves Caribbean dishes like jerk chicken and oxtails, alongside a few Mr. Sub favorites such as Philly steak subs and ham and cheese subs.
