After closing abruptly, a popular Myrtle Beach grocery store known for Latin American food and products has shut down for good.

Maz Fresco’s last day was May 24. On Friday afternoon, signs had been removed from the exterior as workers cleared the store of inventory and displays. Beyond aisles stocked with Latin American favorites and imported goods, Maz Fresco also featured fresh meat and produce, a bakery and a small restaurant serving up staples likes tacos and tamales.

According to manager Gaspar Burgos, the store shut down after facing high bills, low sales and a lack of support from the Myrtle Beach community in a difficult economy.

Although the Myrtle Beach location at 512 S. Kings Highway is gone, Maz Fresco will continue operating three smaller locations in the Charleston area and focus on finding a new city to grow, Burgos said.

“We are grateful to everyone who supported us throughout this journey, and we look forward to serving our customers in a new location,” said Burgos.
