THE LOWDOWN

If you’re not looking for it, you may miss Bourbon and Burnz. It looks like any other specialty shop in Pawleys Island.

Once you walk inside, it’s obvious the specialties here are booze and stogies. One wall is lined with just about every type of bourbon, whiskey or spirit you can conjure, from the rare to the common. If you’re a novice, the staff can walk you through it. If you’re a connoisseur, there are bottles you won’t see anywhere else.

As far as cigars go, there’s a wall displaying more than 100 different types, including last year’s cigar of the year, Oliva Serie V Melanio Figurado. The air never smells stale. Air purifiers constantly recycle air.

The owners refer to the food as a “Piattini” menu. It’s a small plate affair – cheese boards or wings, a sandwich or two. It’s limited and focused to be paired with the beverages.

Happy hour runs from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with $1 or $2 taken off the price of drinks. Tuesdays are ladies nights, and bottles of wine are half-priced.

There’s also a membership option. You can get a membership for a $150 per year which gets you access to the membership lounge. For a $300 membership, you can an accompanying cigar locker. The lounge is complete with leather couches, a fireplace and a large-screen TV. The walls are decorated with the tops of bourbon kegs.

TIPS

Bourbon and Burnz opens at 4 p.m. and closes when things wind down. The discounted drinks start as soon as the doors unlock, so get there early. Or you can get a membership, so you can sit back, sip some whiskey and smoke a stogie.
