Myrtle Beach theater hosting series with Def Comedy Jam alums throughout February
Asher Theatre owner James Stephens III is celebrating Black History Month by celebrating black comedy.
The Myrtle Beach theater is hosting four alumni of the Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam HBO series, one each Friday in February.
Tony Woods will kick off the Black History Black Comedy Series on Feb. 4, followed by Shuckey Duckey on Feb. 11, Willie Brown on Feb. 18 and Hamburger on Feb. 25.
Stephens, an alumnus of Def Comedy Jam himself who carries the moniker “The Man of a Thousand Voices,” will open for each of the four comics. He gives the group of performers a collective motion picture rating of PG-13.
“I thought I’d bring some funny, clean national comedians to Myrtle Beach to celebrate Black History Month with me and dispel some of the rumors that all black comedians are dirty,” Stephens said.
Each headlining comic has two shows scheduled for 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Woods is an original member of both Def Comedy Jam and P. Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy, is featured in the Tiffany Haddish Netflix stand-up special “They Ready,” and has been recognized by Dave Chappelle as being a mentor.
Cecil Armstrong, aka Shuckey Duckey, has been the ringmaster of the UniverSoul Circus and is known for the catchphrase “Shuckey Duckey Quack Quack.”
Brown is a ventriloquist and comedian who performs Willie Brown & Friends with his primary dummy Woody and cantankerous elder Uncle Rufus. He has appeared on BET Comic View, Loco Comedy Jam, Phaturdays, The Jenny Jones Show, and most recently in a recurring role on the Showtime network series “Barbershop.” He’s also a creator of the Clean Comedy Clinic.
“They can expect to have a great time,” Brown said Monday. “If they like Jeff Dunham, they’ll like Willie Brown.”
Alonzo Jones, aka Hamburger, is known for his Cowboy hat and frequent use of the word Hamburger. He has appeared on Showtime at the Apollo, ComicView, Comedy Central and Evening at the Improv.
Tickets are $40 for each show and are available at the website ashertheatre.com.
The Asher Theatre’s upcoming schedule also includes the recurring Murder at the Cotton Club murder mystery dinner show, a Motown show, tributes to Lionel Richie, Barry White and Nina Simone, and a Ray Charles and Sam Cooke tribute show that will be available online and hosted online by Sinbad.
