Carolina Comedy Club in Broadway at the Beach remains closed amid pandemic
Carolina Comedy Club at Broadway at the Beach has not reopened for the summer tourism season and has no scheduled future events, according to the calendar on its website.
The club, which opened early in 2013, has been home to national touring comedians who performed weekly throughout each year, and The Magic of Carl Michael show for each of the past seven summers.
Carolina Comedy Club has been closed since March 17, when it announced it was closing because of government restrictions caused by the coronavirus.
Neither club owner Freddie Rick nor operations manager Justin Swanson have returned messages seeking comment on the club’s future.
The club is operated through a lease with Broadway at the Beach owner Burroughs & Chapin Co. Broadway general manager Jim Powalie said in an email that it is the company’s policy not to comment on tenant leases.
Myrtle Beach’s 25-year comedy club, the Comedy Cabana, has been hosting shows at 50 percent capacity since May 12. Both comedy clubs have kitchens and serve food during shows.
Rick, a Myrtle Beach businessman who also owns Helicopter Adventures, purchased the Carolina Comedy Club business in The Avenue section of Broadway at the Beach in May 2019.
Rick was charged with aggravated assault, according to Horry County court records, for allegedly hitting a security guard with his vehicle in August 2019 near the entrance to his club in the Broadway parking lot. The case is pending.
