‘He’s definitely a flight risk.’ Ocean Boulevard shooter denied bond
A 17-year-old accused of shooting seven people on Ocean Boulevard on June 18 was denied bond on the seven counts of attempted murder Tuesday morning.
Derias J’Shaun Little of Mt. Gilead, N.C. is also charged with carjacking and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He is being tried as an adult.
The Court set the bond at $50,000 for the carjacking charge and $30,000 for possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
“He’s definitely a flight risk,” said Judge Jennifer P. Wilson.
Police say Little was known to have been “involved in gang activity” and knew his immediate victim in the shooting.
“The incident stems from another conflict that originated in North Carolina where (the shooter and his first victim) … are from and as you know, guns were involved,” acting Myrtle Beach police Chief Amy Prock told city leaders after the shooting.
Seven people were injured and six were hospitalized with “non-life-threatening injuries,” including Little, who police say was shot by an armed security officer on the scene.
Myrtle Beach police were responding to the area of Fifth Avenue North and Ocean Boulevard to break up a large crowd around 12:25 a.m. June 18. Some in the crowd started to run as cruisers approached with blue lights flashing.
Then, a fight broke out between a few men near the Wayfarer Motel at Fourth Avenue North and Ocean Boulevard. Seconds later, one of the men in the fight pulled a gun from his pants and opened fire, according to a Facebook Live video that captured the shooting.
Little fled the scene by carjacking a vehicle, Lt. Joey Crosby said in a release from the Myrtle Beach Police Department. Little was apprehended in the parking garage of the Palace Resort three minutes later, according to police.
He has remained under guard at the hospital since the shooting. Police say they are waiting for him to be released and of “sound mind” before serving him with warrants and explaining his charges, which Prock said will include several counts of attempted murder.
There are seven attempted murder charges and here are the injuries:
- Victim one was shot in the neck and upper right arm causing life threatening injuries
- Victim two was shot in the upper right arm causing non-life threatening injuries
- Victim three was struck in his upper right side exiting his back causing non-life threatening injuries
- Victim four was struck in her upper right arm causing non-life threatening injuries
- Victim five was struck in her calf causing non-life threatening injuries
- Victim six was a responding officer (who wasn’t shot) but his police car was struck multiple times
- Victim seven was the armed security guard who returned gunfire with Little
The case remains under investigation.
In his home county of Montgomery in North Carolina, Little faces charges of a misdemeanor probation violation, a felony possession with intent to manufacture sell or deliver marijuana, a misdemeanor simple possession of marijuana, a felony count of breaking and entering, felony larceny after breaking and entering, a felony count of possessing stolen goods, felony larceny, felony conspiracy to break-into a building, felony possession of a weapon of mass destruction, misdemeanor carrying a concealed gun, misdemeanor possession of a handgun by a minor and two counts of felony larceny of a dog and misdemeanor injury to personal property for offenses dating back to 2015.
