One hospitalized after Ocean Boulevard hotel fire

A 31-year-old man was taken to the hospital with burns after a fire broke out on the 14th floor of an Ocean Boulevard resort Tuesday.

Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue crews responded to the blaze about 2:30 a.m. at the Ocean Reef Resort at 7100 North Ocean Boulevard, according to authorities.

The fire was contained to one room in an older part of the resort, Battalion Chief and Fire Marshal Bruce Arnel with MBFR said.

The building was evacuated during the blaze, and its cause is still under investigation, according to Arnel.

A Myrtle Beach police report states a woman came to the front desk and told employees her room was on fire and someone was in the bed.

Police went up to investigate and saw smoke billowing from the room. Smoke poured from inside after a responding officer kicked open the door, which was already open about an inch or two, according to incident report.

The officer shouted to see if anyone was inside, but no one responded, the report says. MBFR crews soon arrived and cleared the room. Firefighters discovered one male victim unresponsive in the back corner of the room, and the man was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, police said.

Authorities discovered the woman who reported the fire had an active arrest warrant. She was arrested and taken to the Myrtle Beach Jail, according to the police report; however, Lt. Joey Crosby with Myrtle Beach police said no charges had been filed later Tuesday morning.

Detectives were called and a crime scene was set up, according to the report.

The victim’s condition was unknown later Tuesday morning.

More information will be provided as soon as it becomes available. Please check back for more details.
