55-year-old Conway man dies in house fire; 2 others jump to safety from second floor

A 55-year-old man is dead after a blaze ignited late Monday night, and two others were taken to a hospital after leaping from a second story window as the fire burned the home, resulting in a total loss.

William Schaidt of the Conway area died from injuries related to the fire about 11:15 p.m. Monday, according to Darris Fowler, deputy coroner with the Horry County Coroner’s Office.

Horry County Fire Rescue was called out to the blaze about 11:22 p.m. and found heavy flames brightening the night sky upon arrival, according to Brian VanAernam, spokesman with Horry County Fire Rescue.

The two inside who escaped the flames by jumping from the second story of the home were alerted to the fire by the howls of a smoke detector, VanAernam said.

Conway Fire Department was called out to give mutual aid to HCFR, and no firefighters were injured, according to VanAernam.

The fire remains under investigation by the Horry County police and fire departments. Police are typically called in to investigate when a death is involved in a fire, according to Lt. Raul Denis with Horry County police.
