Surfside council conducting investigation into possible missing money

The Town of Surfside Beach is currently conducting an audit to see if money has disappeared from its finance department, Mayor Bob Childs confirmed.

Childs said the town is not yet sure if any money has disappeared, and the town’s own staff are conducting the audit.

“At this time I don’t think there [are] any attorneys involved, that I know of,” Childs said.

He said the investigation has been going on for about three weeks, but did not specify when he was told about the potential issue.

“Council is kept up to speed on things that are going on,” Childs said. “There’s not anything I can really say. It’s a legal issue and still under investigation.”

Diana King, the finance director for Surfside Beach, could not be reached by phone Thursday.
