Myrtle Beach city manager receives 5 percent raise
Myrtle Beach City Manager John Pedersen has received a 5 percent raise, bringing his base pay to $178,447.
Pedersen, who joined the city in 2002 and became city manager two years ago, said he was excited for the next year.
“We have a really, really great staff,” Pedersen said. “I can’t ask for more than that.”
In their Tuesday meeting, members of city council were complimentary of the city manager, who serves as the head unelected executive of city government.
“I’ll be the first to say, Mr. Manager, job well done, and I look forward to your next 12 months of service to the city,” Councilman Wayne Gray said.
The raise is composed of a 3 percent cost of living raise and a 2 percent merit raise, and the manager’s new contract will begin Nov. 3. In addressing city council Tuesday, Pedersen said he was thankful that the panel is supportive of city staff. Myrtle Beach changed its pay scheme for employees this year, raising the highest possible raise for most employees to 5 percent.
“You indicated your support for making up for some times when were were not able to make salary adjustments,” Pedersen said. “I really think that [city employees] know that you have their back, and I appreciate that very much.”
Pedersen received a 3 percent raise last year, in addition to a $3,500 moving bonus.
