‘Brooke & Jubal’ spark weekday mornings for Energy 92.1
The roster card for the Myrtle Beach radio scene needs some revising, with a new morning show on one station, and a nighttime staple moving to a sister station.
This past week, WMYB-FM “Energy” 92.1 began airing “Brooke & Jubal” for its morning drive show, Mondays-Fridays. Hosted by Brooke Fox and Jubal Flagg, and syndicated by Premiere Networks from their home base at KQMV-FM “Movin” 92.5 in Seattle, the show airs 6-10 a.m. in Myrtle Beach.
Josh Gertzog, market manager for Alpha Media, the owner of the five-station cluster in Myrtle Beach that includes Energy 92.1, with its contemporary hit radio format, touched on the “trendy approach” taken by Brooke, Jubal, and co-host Jose Balanos, a comedian.
“It is somewhat out of the ordinary,” he said. “Many morning radio shows look to entertain, but ‘Brooke & Jubal’ is a little more cutting edge, appealing to both genders, but especially women, which fits the Energy 92.1 format. Every 15 minutes is a new segment designed to reach the active consumer, as opposed to other radio shows and media that focus more on couch potatoes. Its almost as if ‘Brooke & Jubal’ are the Twitter and Facebook feeds of terrestrial radio.”
Premiere Networks put “Brooke & Jubal” into syndication, coast to coast, earlier this year. Gertzog said Columbia and Hilton Head Island are two other regional markets carrying the show.
Asked if this type of morning show is a sought-after spark to appeal to wider demographics, Gertzog said yes, and that although targeted at adults 25-44, “there are many listeners around the country older and younger than this.”
WMYB changed its nickname and music style in mid-September from “Star” to “Energy,” all prefaced by Christmas music around the clock for three days. Gertzog said the past two months since the transition have generated “few complaints and a lot of positive comments.”
“We don’t expect to see ratings success until next summer,” he said, “so we are in this for the long haul. Anything before that will be gravy.”
John Tesh’s show shifts to sister station
Fidelity Broadcasting has shuffled some things this autumn, too.
John Tesh’s radio show, “Intelligence for Your Life” – with help from his wife, Connie Sellecca, and Gib Gerard, his partners on the syndicated TV show of the same name – has moved from the “Easy” signal simulcast on WEZV-FM 105.9 and WGTN-FM 100.7 to sister station WYEZ-FM 94.5 “The Tide.”
Fidelity’s general manager, Matt Sedota, said Tesh’s show, airing 7 p.m.-midnight Mondays-Fridays, is “a better fit with the the new adult contemporary sound of The Tide (www.945thetide.com), for which its format was switched in April 2015 from rhythmic oldies.
Also, Nick Summers anchors the morning drive on weekdays at The Tide, with KC Carson working 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and Wendy Fields 3-7 p.m. Sedota said Carson had worked in Greenville and that Fields has been in this market as well as at stations in Virginia.
Sedota said The Tide is “doing very well, with tons of activity and growing, especially now that we are the only adult contemporary station in the market, with the switch of Star to Energy.”
Also, Summers succeeded Wally “B” Berlingeri, another longtime local radio personality who now does double duty Mondays-Fridays for two Cumulus stations in Myrtle Beach: as co-host on Pat Paone’s “The Drive” talk show, 7-9 a.m. on WSEA-FM 100.3 “Sports Radio – The Team,” – and 7 p.m.-midnight on WSYN-FM “Sunny” 103.1, a station known for its accent on 1980s music.
