Pair of notable saltwater fishing seminars on tap
It’s mid-February and seminar season is here. A couple of excellent sessions on area saltwater fishing are upcoming, offering an opportunity for anglers to glean excellent information from very knowledgeable local captains and guides.
Both events will also benefit two very worthy causes.
The details follow:
CCU Saltwater Anglers: The Coastal Carolina University Saltwater Angler Club will host a wide-ranging seminar on Feb. 20 at CCU’s Brittain Hall, located at 23 Chanticleer Drive in Conway.
There will be at least six captains covering a variety of subjects on fishing the saltwater marshes to the offshore waters.
▪ Capt. Keith Logan of North Myrtle Beach Fishing Charters will cover king mackerel fishing.
▪ Capt. Webber Smith of Reel Deep Fishing Charters will provide details of fishing in the bluewater in the vicinity of the Gulf Stream.
▪ Capt. David Cutler of Low Country Fishing Charters and Capt. Matt Eisenberger of Aces Up Fishing will discuss inshore fishing including red drum, spotted seatrout and flounder.
▪ Capt. Lee Thomas of Fish On Charters in Murrells Inlet and Capt. Derek Treffinger of Ocean Isle Fishing Center will go over bottom-fishing techniques.
▪ Low Country Fly Shop will conduct a fly-fishing seminar.
Admission is $15, and $10 for students. Tickets include lunch and one raffle ticket. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. with the seminar beginning at 10 a.m.
The proceeds of the seminar go to the CCU Saltwater Anglers Club, which is involved in numerous activities throughout the year including various fishing trips.
Club members compete in Southern Kingfish Association tournaments with CCU Prof. Joe Winslow. The CCU crew finished 30th in the SKA Nationals in 2015 aboard Winslow’s boat, Hooligan. Members of the club are also involved in volunteer work such as beach cleanups and serving as volunteers to assist with local fishing tournaments.
“It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year,” club President James Coleman said. “We raffle off gifts such as YETI Coolers, rods and reels.”

The seminar will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Feb. 27 at St. James Middle School, located at 9775 St. James Road in Murrells Inlet.
The speakers include:
▪ Capt. Fred Rourk of Sweet Tea Charters and Capt. Greg Holmes of Fish Skinny Charters will discuss Redfish Tactics for Year-Round Success.

▪ Capt. Jason Burton of Fly Girl Charters will discuss Reef Fishing Techniques from Water Ceiling to Ocean Floor.

SALTT is a series of local tournaments for middle and high school students staged out of the Carroll Campbell Marine Complex in Georgetown that targets red drum and largemouth bass.
Proceeds of the seminar will help cover operating expenses of the series.
“This seminar has some of the area’s best fishing guides and captains to share their knowledge with the community, while helping the kids raise money for the league and their respective school’s club or team,” said Coach Rayburn Poston, founder and coordinator of SALTT.
Admission is $20 to the seminar. For more information, contact Poston at 843-902-4274.
