Jumpy Geathers has two Super Bowl rings to commemorate his 13-year NFL career.

He was able to give Carvers Bay High School a memento Friday that pays tribute to the two titles and the role the Georgetown County school district played in his success.

As part of the NFL’s Super Bowl High School Honor Roll program, Geathers supplied Carvers Bay High a Wilson Golden Football that will reside in the school’s trophy case.

Geathers was born in Georgetown and attended Choppee High, which was merged with nearby Pleasant Hill High to create Carvers Bay in 2000.

Geathers was not feeling up to taking part in the ceremony Friday between Carvers Bay’s boys and girls basketball games against Heminway, so his daughter Jasmine Geathers presented the football to principal Richard Neal.

“I’m a daddy’s girl so I had to be a part of the moment,” said Jasmine Geathers, an Andrews High and South Carolina State graduate. “I’m my dad’s biggest fan so I couldn’t miss this night. I remember him coming to pick me up and letting me walk on the field.

“… If he was feeling better he would have been here. He was really excited. He told all the family about it and sent me a picture and had a few at the house waiting to be framed. It’s a privilege.”

Geathers’ brother and fellow NFL retiree Robert Geathers, and nephew and current Indianapolis Colts’ defensive back Clayton Geathers Jr. were also in attendance Friday.

The NFL started the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll program as part of the nationwide Super Bowl 50 celebration to recognize schools and communities that contributed to Super Bowl history and positively impacted the game.

High schools across the country and globe are being given a Wilson Golden Football for every player or head coach who graduated from the school and was on an active Super Bowl roster, and those players and coaches have an opportunity to deliver the commemorative footballs personally.

More than 2,000 high schools and roughly 3,000 players and coaches will be recognized this season.

The NFL Foundation, which gave $1 million for the campaign, will also provide schools with the opportunity to apply for grants of up to $5,000 to support their football programs, along with a new character education curriculum.

Geathers was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the second round (42nd overall) of the 1984 NFL Draft out of Wichita State.

He played for the Saints (1984-89), Washington Redskins (1990-93), Atlanta Falcons (1994-95) and Denver Broncos (1996), winning Super Bowl XXVI with the Redskins and earning a ring with the Broncos for the 1997 season despite being injured for his final year in the NFL.

At 6-foot-7 and 290 pounds he was a forceful pass rusher, famous for his “forklift” rush in which he picked up his blocker and carried him to the quarterback.
