New University of South Carolina head football coach Will Muschamp didn’t waste any time trying to haul back in one of the program’s most important recruiting targets.

Hours after being introduced in Columbia as the Gamecocks’ new coach, Muschamp headed to Conway for a meeting with local prospect Bryan Edwards, Conway High School football coach Chuck Jordan confirmed to The Sun News.

The Tigers’ senior wide receiver, family members and Jordan met with Muschamp early Monday evening at Edwards’ home.

Edwards originally verbally committed to South Carolina in March, but decided to reopen his recruitment after Steve Spurrier stepped down as USC coach earlier this season. Muschamp was the defensive coordinator at Auburn this season after four years as the head coach at Florida.

Edwards made a recruiting visit to Clemson last month. Jordan recently told The (Columbia) State: “I think he will take an official visit to USC before Christmas. But he could make a decision before that and won’t take a visit.”

Jordan also told The State that he believes Edwards’ decision will be between the Tigers and Gamecocks. He doesn’t believe Georgia is a factor at this point.

“He’s trying to be real deliberate especially having decommitted,” Jordan told The State. “He understands he needs to be absolutely for sure. He’ll tell me when he feels good about it. Clemson wants him to make a decision soon and Carolina wants him to wait. They are just in different places.”
