Ranking the Most Important Dolphins, No. 9: Is Paul On His Way to Elite Status?

The Miami Dolphins will head into training camp at the end of July with a totally different roster than the one that ended the 2025 season after an offseason overhaul that saw the departure of several significant veterans and the arrival of newcomers young and old.

The Dolphins have 91 players on their roster with the exemption they have for England-born rookie tight end Seydou Traore, a participant of the International Player Pathway Program.

As life goes in the NFL, not every player on the roster is equal, so we decided to rank all of them in terms of their importance to the Dolphins' success in the 2026 season. The list was determined on the basis of not just ability but also expected role and significance to the overall progress of the organization as it continues the rebuilding project that began with the hiring of Jon-Eric Sullivan as GM and Jeff Hafley as head coach.

This is part of a series that will run in the lead-up to start of training camp.

NUMBER 9: T PATRICK PAUL

How he joined the Dolphins

The Dolphins selected Paul in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft. He was the 55th overall, the 23rd of the round.

Contract status

Paul is entering the third year of the four-year, $6.9 million rookie contract that included a $1.9 million signing bonus. His cap number for 2026 is $1.9 million. Paul, who will become eligible for a contract extension next offseason, has no guaranteed salary in 2027.

His 2025 season

After the retirement of Terron Armstead, Paul took over at left tackle and started all 17 games. Paul was flagged for 10 penalties in 2025, including six false starts. Pro Football Focus gave him a season grade of 66.2, which ranked 43rd among 84 offensive tackles with a qualifying number of snaps.

His projected role

There certainly can be some debate about just how good Paul was in his first season as a starter, but what seems pretty obvious is that he's a player on the upswing, which is why you often saw him listed as a breakout candidate from national media outllets. Where there seems to be some agreement is that Paul right now is more advanced as a pass blocker than a run blocker, and evening out those aspects will be the next step for him. Paul's continued development will be key for the Dolphins if the offense is to have a decent amount of success in 2026, particularly if first-round pick Kadyn Proctor also delivers as a rookie. It's a big year for Paul, too, because an even better season for him in 2026 could lead to a big-time contract extension next offseason.
