Carolina Panthers agree to terms with WR Hunter Renfrow following year off

The Carolina Panthers aren’t done adding to their wide receiver room.

The team agreed to terms on a one-year contract with veteran wideout Hunter Renfrow on Sunday. The immediate terms of the deal were not released.

The Panthers are coming off a draft weekend that saw them add wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan in the first round and receiver/returner Jimmy Horn Jr. in the sixth round. Renfrow, who stepped away from the NFL after being cut by the Las Vegas Raiders last offseason, will also be added to the suddenly crowded depth chart at the position.

Renfrow, 29, made the Pro Bowl in 2021. He caught 269 passes for 2,884 yards and 17 touchdowns from 2019 to 2023 with the Raiders. The 2019 fifth-round pick produced 25 catches for 255 yards in his final year in Las Vegas.

The former Clemson Tigers playmaker, who is a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, native, will compete for playing time in a stacked room of young and experienced talent. He also has experience as a punt returner, as he averaged 9.7 yards per return during his five-year stint with the Raiders. The Panthers selected Horn, at least partially because of his return experience, so Horn and Renfrow could compete this summer for that job.

Renfrow’s main competition behind McMillan, Xavier Legette and Adam Thielen will be David Moore, Jalen Coker and Dan Chisena. He will need to show he’s retained his speed and route-running prowess after take a one-year break from football.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound receiver will also face competition at wideout with Horn and a host of reported undrafted rookies.

The Panthers have agreed to terms with more undrafted rookies than their roster will currently allow. Hunter is now added with that group. So, the Panthers will need to make some roster reductions to their incumbent depth chart to house all the new players.
