Panthers OC Joe Brady interviews with at least 4 teams for head coaching jobs
Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady is drawing interest to become an NFL head coach.
With his first season as an offensive coordinator complete, teams have reached out to the Panthers about interviewing Brady for their vacant head coaching jobs. Brady interviewed with the Houston Texans for their job opening Tuesday and the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday.
He also met with the Los Angeles Chargers and New York Jets this week.
Brady, who is 31 years old, had never been an offensive coordinator at any level and called all of the plays by himself in 2020 for the first time. Prior to being hired by head coach Matt Rhule, Brady was the passing game coordinator during LSU’s championship season in 2019. He spent two years as an assistant with the New Orleans Saints in 2017 and 2018.
Since his time at LSU, Brady has been considered one of the coaches to watch. Many expected that he would rise quickly and could become a top candidate in a short period of time. He would become the current youngest head coach, but he would not make history. The Los Angeles Rams hired Sean McVay at 30-years old in 2017, making him the youngest head coach hired in the modern era of the league.
His rise, however, is somewhat unprecedented. Four years prior to being hired by the Panthers, Brady was a graduate assistant at Penn State. McVay, on the other hand, had multiple years of experience under his belt on the NFL level before he was hired as a head coach.
Carolina has already lost three offensive assistants with quarterbacks coach Jake Peetz and offensive assistant DJ Mangas taking the offensive coordinator and passing game coordinator jobs at LSU, respectively. Assistant offensive line coach Marcus Satterfield is accepting the offensive coordinator job at South Carolina.
In 2020, the Panthers offense was 21st in net yards (349.5) and 24th in points per game (24.9). The unit finished the season struggling to score points, especially in the red zone. Star running back Christian McCaffrey missed 13 games during the course of the season. The Carolina offense did finish with four players totaling over 1,000 scrimmage yards — DJ Moore, Robby Anderson, Curtis Samuel and Mike Davis — becoming the fifth team in NFL history to do so.
